Instrument Transformers (CT, VT/PT, CVT/CCVT)
Instrument transformers are specialized devices used in medium and high-voltage electrical systems to safely measure and monitor electrical quantities such as current and voltage.
They step down high system values into standardized levels suitable for protective relays, metering equipment, and control systems, while also providing electrical isolation between high-voltage circuits and instrumentation.
Current Transformers (CT)
Voltage/Potential Transformers (VT/PT)
Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVT/CCVT)
Current transformers reduce high electrical current to a standardized low current (typically 1A or 5A) for safe measurement and protection.
They are connected in series with the power circuit and are widely used in:
- Overcurrent protection
- Energy metering
- Load monitoring
- Protection relays
Voltage transformers reduce high system voltage to a standardized level (typically 100V or 110V).
They are connected in parallel with the circuit and are used for:
- Voltage measurement
- Synchronization
- Protection systems
- Power quality monitoring
Capacitive Voltage Transformers (CVTs), also known as CCVTs, are used in high-voltage transmission systems to step down extra-high voltages using a capacitive divider combined with an electromagnetic unit.
They are primarily used in HV and EHV systems (typically 72.5 kV and above) where conventional voltage transformers become less economical.
They are used for:
- High-voltage metering
- Protection and control systems
- Power line carrier communication (PLCC)
- Voltage measurement in transmission networks
- Electrical substations
- Medium voltage switchgear systems
- High voltage transmission networks
- Power generation plants
- Renewable energy installations
- Industrial power distribution systems
Instrument transformers are a key part of protection systems.
They provide real-time electrical data to protective relays, which detect faults such as:
- Short circuits
- Overloads
- Ground faults
- Voltage instability
When a fault is detected, relays trigger circuit breakers to isolate the affected section and protect the system.
